The story of Rana

Rana is a 37 year old woman who lost her husband in the conflict. She was forced to leave her home in Homs in 2012. Shortly after the loss of her husband, his brother started to pressure her to marry him as a second wife. When she refused, he started to abuse her verbally and physically. Rana had no support network nor the financial means to live independently, until she met Sabbara where she is now a full-time employee and participates in all of our drama therapy workshops.

“Being financially independent for the first time has helped me regain her confidence and has helped me learn how to deal with my children without resorting to violence.”

The story of Majida

Majida is a 40 year old woman who has been suffering from PTS for the last few years. Majida suffers from extreme phobias that have been debilitating (phobias of heights and of strangers). She told us that since she started working with Sabbara and participating in its drama therapy workshops, her phobias decreased in an unprecedented way. The work has provided her with an outlet for her anxiety and that is has helped to fill the void - making it harder for her to fall back into a cycle of fear.

“Working has been better for me than any of the medication I have been taking. […] Whenever I wake up at night with any kind of fear, I start to embroider until it goes away. Sabbara’s drama therapy workshops have given me a platform to talk about my issues and have helped me make friends.”

The story of Fatima

Fatima, 40, from Homs, describes the impact of working with Sabbara in the arts and crafts, to overcome the hardest of challenges.

“We were forced to leave our home, the bombs were falling like rain. Work gives you strength. You feel you are on the top, and people look at you with respect. You are not on the outside anymore.”
